The Giver

Okay so I had to read this for language arts, but surprisingly, this was actually a good class novel.

Jonas lives in a society with no color, music, emotion, pain, hatred, war, and choice. You are assigned a spouse, then can be assigned no more than two children; one boy and one girl. He lives with his mother and father and sister, Lily, but one day his dad, who works as a nurturer, brings home a newchild whom they name Gabriel.

When children turn twelve in the society, they are assigned a job. Jonas is assigned to be the Receiver. He spends a lot of his time with the previous Receiver, "The Giver", learning how to deal with the memories that are sent to him, as no other citizens are allowed to have these memories. Along the way finds out a lot of disturbing secrets about himself, his family, and the society.

7/10 As I said before, this book was pretty good as far as class novels go. It was interesting reading a utopian novel instead of a dystopian novel. I have to say, I still prefer dystopian novels, but I haven't really read many utopian novels. It was so weird thinking about a world without music and color and weather, etc. I think I would die...then again, you don't really miss things you never knew, so maybe I'd be okay...
